Service Recommendations

A good host is hard to come by, but Media Temple is by far the best I’ve come across in all the years I have been developing for the web. For low-traffic sites, their Grid Service seriously can’t be beat, and for more demanding applications, their DV service is a fifth of the cost of a dedicated host without the compromises you might expect.

Dropbox is an excellent and free tool that lets you share files among different groups and clients. I wrote more about Dropbox in this post. Sign up for Dropbox with this link and get an extra 250MB of shared space for free!

Must-Own Programming Books

Layer Tennis, Anyone?

Layer Tennis This is one of the better diversions I’ve come across in a while. If you have a few minutes and are interested in watching top-level designers flex their creative muscles for no other reason than to beat the virtual snot out of each other, check out Layer Tennis.

In Layer Tennis, two designers send a composition back and forth, making changes and updates along the way. The results are judged by the peanut gallery in their forums and at the end of ten rounds, a winner is declared.

What makes this so interesting is watching the design transform week to week and seeing first hand how creative expression can work as a form of literal communication. I’m in awe of people that can do design well, and Layer Tennis is a rare treat.
